89. STEPHEN<sup>5</sup> SEYMOUR (//[[031.Joseph|Joseph]]//<sup>4</sup>,
//[[010.Zachariah|Zachariah]]//<sup>3</sup>, //[[003.John|John]]//<sup>2</sup>,
//[[001.Richard|Richard]]//<sup>1</sup>), born at Hartford, Conn., 9 June 1759,
died ---; married 20 Sept. 1786, MARIETTA GRISWOLD.

According to one account, he married ABIGAIL SIMONS of Colebrook. As he had
children born before 1786, she may have been his first wife.

He bought land in Colebrook, Conn., from Samuel and Keziah Mills, 27 Jan. 1787.
He was admitted a voter in Colebrook in 1798, but had been tythingman there in
1784.. He moved over the line into Sandisfield, Mass., about 1800, and was
living there in 1834; but in 1838 he removed to Granville, Mass., and in 1844 to
Ludlow.

Allen, Lyman and Stephen Seymour were scholars in the Colebrook North District
School in 1796.

He served as Sergeant in the Revolutionary War for three years; was at
Peekskill, White Plains, New York, New Brunswick, and Monmouth, but not actually
engaged in the battle at the last place. His application states that he
substituted for his brother, Sergt. Joseph.

**CHARLES J.<sup>8</sup> SEYMOUR** (1840-1906), a native of Colebrook, Conn., 
went in youth with his father to New York City. He enlisted on 23 Apr. 1861 as a 
Private in Co. A, 10th Regt., New York Volunteers. In August, he was 
commissioned Lieutenant and Aide-de-Camp to Brig.-Gen. Sickles, served as 
Lieutenant in Co. L, 2d Penn. Heavy Artillery, and resigned to assume the rank 
of Major, 25th Cavalry, New York Volunteers. He participated in the Shenandoah 
Valley campaign. He was honorably discharged for disability, 28 Jan. 1865.

Mr. Seymour resided for a short time in Newport, R.I., and spent the last years
of his life in Brookline, Mass. He bought the alleged Seymour Bible containing
spurious entries which the author has discussed at length in the Introduction.
