born at Albany, N.Y., 23 Sept. 1793, died there 26 or 27 July 1867; married
first, 2 Apr. 1816, JANE BRADT, born at Albany, 14 Dec. 1796, died there 13 Aug.
1837, daughter of Isaac and Elizabeth (Van Deusen); married second, 12 June
1849, MARGARET NEWLANDS, born at Albany, 4 Nov. 1804, daughter of David and Jane
(McHarg).
He enlisted in the War of 1812, at Albany, Sept. 1814, was Orderly Sergt., and
stationed at Staten Island. By trade a bookbinder, he pursued that business
successfully in Albany for several years. He served as Alderman, 1822 to 1832; a
member of the State Legislature in 1832 and 1836; and for eleven years he was
Collector and Inspector of the port of Albany, receiving his appointment from
President Jackson. He was prominent in the Masonic Order, and was Grand
Treasurer of the Grand Chapter of New York for many years. He was for several
years Chamberlain of the City of Albany; a director of the Albany City Bank from
its incorporation in 1834 until his death; and a director of the Albany Medical
College from its organization.
