born at Litchfield, Conn., 20 Apr. 1791, died at Lansing, Mich., 30 Dec. 1864,
aged 73 years; married first, 2 Mar. 1818, MYRA ABIGAIL HILL, born at St.
Albans, Vt., about 1798, died at Flushing, Mich., 9 Aug. 1847, aged 49 years;
married second, 30 Oct. 1849, PRUA (---) SMITH, who died in 1877.

He removed to Pompey Hill, N.Y., in 1812, and five years later established
himself as a merchant in Clarkson, Monroe County, N.Y.; he was the first
Supervisor of that town, and in 1821 was appointed Sheriff. In 1823 he moved his
business to Brockport, N.Y. He played an active part in the building up of that
town, and in the routing of the Erie Canal, then in course of construction. In
1824 he was an organizer of the Bank of Rochester, and served as its cashier and
afterwards as its president.

He became interested with his brother Charles in the purchase and settlement of
Flushing, Mich., in 1835, and they built the first mills there. He settled there
in 1845, and in Lansing in 1847. There he was Supervisor, and an Elder in the
Presbyterian Church; and he served in both House and Senate of the Michigan
Legislature.

He was an active and intelligent man, handsome in appearance and dignified in
bearing; esteemed for his probity and judgment. He was a Jeffersonian Democrat,
and at a later period one of the organizers of the Republican party.
