+He was a carpenter. He enlisted at the age of eighteen, 1 Sept. 1862 at
+Pittsfield, Mass., as Private in Co. H, 49th Regiment, Mass. Vol.
+Infantry. He served in the Dept. of the East, 1st Brigade, 1st Division,
+th Corps, Department of the Gulf, Major-General Banks commanding: also
+the 1st Maine, 116th N.Y., 48th Mass. Regiment. On duty in New York
+three months, he sailed from there 24 Feb. on the steamer //Illinois;//
+served in the Defences of New Orleans and Baton Rouge, General Sherman
+commanding. He was in the attack on Port Hudson, lasting twenty-one days
+and nights. He remained on duty until 8 Aug., was then ordered home and
+mustered out 21 Sept. 1863.
