THE RIGHT REV. GEORGE FRANKLIN SEYMOUR (1829-1906)

Graduated from Columbia College, 1850; D.D., Racine College; LL.D., Columbia University; D.C.L., University of the South (Sewanee, Tenn.). Founder and First Warden of St. Stephen's College, Annandale, Dutchess Co., N.Y.; Professor of Ecclesiastical History in the General Theological Seminary, New York City; Dean of the same; consecrated first Bishop of Springfield, Illinois, 11 June 1878.

The author once asked the Rt. Rev. John Williams, 4th Bishop of Connecticut, to define a “high churchman.” The instant reply was: “A high churchman, sir, is one who thinks highly of the church.” The author was amused at this characteristic reply of Bishop Williams, but was not greatly informed.

From a photograph furnished by Bishop Seymour's successor in the Diocese of Springfield, the Rt. Rev. John Chanler White.
