The birth record for George shows his mother as Mary Marnoe and father as John Ritchie. . However, due to the time frame, place and his daughter's name there is no denying his relationship to the John Ritchie whose mother is Mary Marnie and whose father is also a John Ritchie. The couple is probably one in the same. This is Thomas Ritchie's brother. . . One of George Ritchie's daughters is listed as Catherine Carnegie Ritchie on a family search file. . Catherine Carnegie would have been his brother's wife or his sister in law. He names this child three years after John Ritchie and Catherine Carnegie are married in 1827 so he must have thought a lot of her. Also naming after in laws is not unusual in Scottish society. In law relationships were often as close as regular brother and sister. There are at least two instances in this family alone where children are named after in laws. The other is Peter Croll McDonald named after Isabel Malcolm McDonalds brother in law Peter Croll who marries her sister Helen Malcolm. Also the Weaver as a middle name for George Ritchie comes from one of his children's birth records, however it must be said that this could be a genuine middle name but it also could have been a misread birth record instead indicating his occupation as most of the Ritchies in this family were linen weavers.
