-Sawbridgeworth, where Richard Seymour the Colonist, as well as his father and grandfather, lived, is a rural parish in Hertfordshire, on the border of Essex, less than fifteen miles from Chelmsford in Essex, where Rev. Thomas Hooker, founder of Hartford, Conn., preached for ten years, and about twenty-five miles northeast of London. The parish records, in addition to entries per¬taining to earlier generations, show the marriage of Richard Seymour to Mercy Ruscoe and the baptism of their eldest son Thomas, later of Norwalk, Conn., who in 1712 sealed his will with a seal charged with two wings con¬joined in lure, the paternal coat of the Seymours of Penhow. The ducal family of Somerset is derived from the Seymours of Penhow, and the Seymers of Dorset (the family of Richard the Chaplain) also used the two wings conjoined in lure.
