THE FIRST MAYOR'S “MOHOGANY DESK AND BOOK CASE”

The desk is shown open, and set within it is the sugar bowl of a silver tea set also owned by the First Mayor. The central space in the broken pediment carries a basket of flowers executed in mahogany. The band of carving in low relief immediately below the pediment is of extreme beauty, but does not clearly show in the photograph. This is a superb piece of cabinet work by Samuel Prince, of New York, and is owned by a descendant of Mary Juliana (Seymour) Chenevard. This is the only piece of furniture specified in the First Mayor's will. The Metropolitan Museum was at one time desirous of securing it to add to its collection of cabinet work of the period.
