Larkin SEYMOUR & Sally BRUCE

Father: Larkin SEYMOUR, (son of George SEYMOUR), b. 1759, Halifax County Virginia, d. 1850/1852, Grainger County Tennessee

Larkin Seymour was born in Halifax County Virginia per World Connect file Darell Dunlop.Larkin is proved as the son of George Seymour in his father's will see notes George Seymour. Although the date is 1758 I have used the date he states on his Rev War pension application of 1759. Larkin states he first moved to Grainger County Tennessee in 1806. Indeed the last tax list he shows up on in Virginia is in 1798 Halifax County, Larkin has a string of land deals he is involved in throughout Grainger County, Tennessee. Land records are recorded at bottom of page after notes. There is a story told to me about Larkin Seymour from a man named Horace Seymour who saw a court record for him in Halifax County Virginia where he was arrested for selling alcohol on the courthouse steps of a county that had tried to outlaw booze. Larkin was selling it and was arrested on the spot. So many people in the county on that day had bought it on their way into the courthouse that they could find no one to attest or witness that he was selling it and the jury had people who had imbibed as well. Larkin was acquitted. Larkin applied for a Rev War pension very late in life when he was 84 years old. Here from Darrell Dunlops great summary of those papers which i have in hard copy “ Revolutionary war soldier, serving under Gen. Lawson at Boyd's Ferry, and under Gen. Greene in VA and NC, where he fought in the battle of Guilford Courthouse. He also participated in the seige of Cornwallis at Yorktown. His application for a pension was disapproved because of lack of documentation or witnesses. He did not apply for the pension until 1843, when he was 84 years old. He moved from Halifax Co., VA to Grainger Co., TN in 1806. ” Larkin also states that when he moved his discharge papers were in a chest , which either got lost in the move or his children who often played in that chest lost or destroyed his papers. Many soldiers who applied this late had trouble getting proof for pensions because of lost paperwork and because many witnesses were dead. Larkin admits he was drafted into the army. Larkin lived until a very old age and is in the home of his son George Barton Seymour in 1850 as a 92 year old man.Land documents follows.p. 418 and 419 James BOONE to Larkin SEAMORE / SEYMORE (Body of deed says JOSEPH BOONE) This Indenture made this sixteenth day of November in the year of our Lord one thousand eight hundred and twelve Between JOSEPH BOONE of the State of NORTH CAROLINA and County of JOHNSON of the one part and Larkin SEYMORE of the State of Tennessee and County of Grainger of the other part witnesseth that for and in consideration of the sum of Seventy dollars to me in hand paid the receipt and payment whereof is hereby acknowleged have granted bargained and sell unto the said Larkin Seymore part of a tract of land situated lying and being in the aforesaid county of Grainger beginning at a beech on a little ISLAND in the CREEK below a Survey of NATHAN WHITEFIELD and runs East… containing four hundred acres more or less being granted to said NEEDHAM WHITEFIELD by Patent bearing date 11th day of July 1788….
