Calaway "Calvin" SEYMOUR & Mary Frances SMYTH

Father: Calaway “Calvin” SEYMOUR, (son of Coleman " Cole" SEYMOUR), b. 23 Oct 1854, Iowa or Missouri, d. 14 May 1919, Wyandotte County Kansas, bur. Highland Park Cemetery, Kansas City KS

Territory was disputed , his father Coleman left Tennesee in mid forties and was in area of what is now Decatur County Iowa but Missouri claimed this land before court decision. Calaway was nicknamed Calvin and while my father was only 3 when he died, he recalls his grandfather talking about his brother Cal. Cal appears to have been born Oct 23 1854 according to his death certificate. However, the names of his parents are incorrect . It is listed as James Seymour and a woman I have never heard of. However, the funeral home director is the informant and may have been way off. I know for a fact from my father and others that this is a natural child of Coleman and Levicy Smith who was born after the death of one of their infant children named Calvan. They honored that son who died in 1853 by naming the next son Calaway and calling him Calvin. There is lots of info on this family because in 1982 when my sister and I began our research the descendants of this man helped and shared some research with my sister Cynthia K Seymour Robinson. I do not recall their names to source them. Calaway ran the Seymour dairy in Wyandotte County Kansas. In 1895 Calaway and his wife and children lived right next door to his brother Harrison and his wife Elizabeth in Wyandotte County Kansas The dairy was sold in 1941. The 1st health permit in KC KS for “raw milk” was issued for this dairy in the 1880's . . He married Mary Smyth who was Elizabeth Smyth“Lizzie's” sister and that is why he spent some time with Harrison as well as the fact they were brothers. Additional information on this family is in hard copy Seymour files. Calaway died of pneumonia following influenza. His death may have been part of the world wide flu epidemic that begin in 1918 after World War I.
