Daniel SINGLETON & Susannah MASON
Father: Daniel SINGLETON, (son of (Unknown)), b. ABT 1718, Virginia, d. 10 Nov 1793, Orange County Virginia
/It is probably worth mentioning that there are pedigree resource files that show Daniel's father as a man named Henry Singleton. however the dates are way out of line which makes me think the file is not properly researched. For instance .in one file Daniel is born to Henry in 1718 when Henry is listed as dead by 1680. Another file which is probably more likely is that his father was a man named Henry Singleton who was born in around 1670 who marries a woman named Susan Ann Newman.in about 1695. But one file gives an about date for this marriage as 1648=1651, This is rather impossible as if Susan Newman was of marriageable age in middle 1600's she certainly did not have a child in 1718. Another has him the son of this Henry who was married in 1651 a rather doubtful scenario as this man probably did not have children 50 some years after his marriage. I have included this as possible parents only in the notes because the dates are so vague and varied but did not want to leave the info out as impossible in all scenarios. Also not to be left out is the mention in one ancestral file or two that Daniel's grandfather (Henrys father) is a man named Robert Singleton born in England around 1590. There is even less info about Robert. All info in all pedigree and ancestral files points to Daniel Singleton as being of English blood or his ancestors coming from England. This is almost certainly true. One file even has Daniel born in England but the balance of the files have him born in Virginia. Also important and verifiable info is the following The rent rolls of VA 1704/5 have: Henry Singleton, Robert Singleton, Sam Singleton in Gloucester, Kingston Parish . All info shows Daniel born in Gloucester County Virginia. Daniel's will is included below. Much can be ascertained by this will. More than likely his wife Susannah is deceased as there is no mention of her in this will.It also lays out all the children of this man. and his date of death and location. There are other children given on FamilySearch pedigree files and it is highly possible that this is so and these children were dead by the time of their father's will. The additional names are Daniel, Sarah and Elizabeth however I have not included in the official list. Daniel is listed as an the head of a family in Orange County 1782 Census. It lists him as having five slaves. Daniel was supposedly with Washington at Valley Forge according to a woman named Vicki Yeley. However, as Daniel was getting on in age at the time of Valley Forge and I have not seen the file , it could be that it was a supposed son of Daniel or a nephew who was the one actually at Valley Forge. It is not impossible for this Daniel to have been there but he was a bit long in the tooth at that time. However this is some documentation from DAR Files as follows. 310. Hazel White - Researcher, Daniel was a Private, Corporal, and Sergeant in the Revolutionary War, serving at Valley Forge with General George Washington. He was in the 1st, 10th, and 12th VA Reg. of Foot. She believes he served from March 1778 or 79 until November 1779. He was 57 which was old at that time“
From the Virginia Gazette 7/22/1773: Run away from the subscriber in Orange Co. VA in July two convictservants Thomas Pruce an Englishman about 5'10” with red hair and of a fair complexion; had on a blue stiped ? skin waistcoat, brown linen, ? trousers, new felt hat, and a pair of common shoes. James Jones, a welchman, of a dark, swarthy complexion, near 6' high, and has black hair; took with him a brown Newmarket coat, a light close bodied ditto, and ? some brown linen shirts and trousers, white ? stockings, new shoes, two worsted caps, and a good hat. ————————————————— Orange Co., VA Will Book #3 Page 314 Will of Daniel Singleton In the name of God Amen, I Daniel Singleton of Orange County of Virginia being in health & of sound and perfect memory (Blessed be God) Do make and ordain this my last will & testament of form following (that is to say) my will and desire is that my Body be buries in a decent & Christ like manner at the discretion of my executors here after named and Secondly all such Dedts as I shall justly owe at the time of my death be paid out of my estate by my Executors as to my estate both real and personal I dispose thereof as follows. Then I give unto my son Manoah Singleton a tract of land adjoining to that tract I gave to my son Manoah Singleton containing one hundred and ninety eight acres which we have already had in popifsion of since became my property. Then I give to my daughter Lois Looker the same tract of land that I gave to my son Edmond Singleton already been in her popifision and agreed to take it for her portion of full part of my estate but know of whither add a present to her with fifteen pounds cash to be paid out of my Estate by my Executors. Then I give to my daughter Susannah Lancaster one feather bed, one cow, ond two sheep already in Popifision and for the further part of my estate in leiu of giving to my first daughter Susannah Lancaster I give unto her present three youngest daughters namely Sarah, Susannah & Elizabeth fifteen pounds each to them and their heirs and of signs forever but should they or either of the above childrendie before they come of age or marry that my desire is that the surviving take the part alloted to the Deceased. Then I give to my daughter Martha Proctor one cow already in Popifsion also five pounds cash to be paid as above. I give to my daughter Mary Perry twenty pounds cash to be paid as above. *Daniel Singleton first appears in Orange Co in 1737 as a young man with one tithable. Phillip Singleton purchases land in Orange Co. in 1741. This land is the 100 acre Haley tract mentioned above, on Mine Run in Orange, recorded 25 June 1741.
John Singleton, presumably a son of Robert Singleton who removed from Virginina to Sumter, SC asks by name after the sons of Daniel Singleton of Orange Co, VA, in a letter concerning his Revolutionary service and that of Daniel's sons, who removed to Kentucky. Letter 1824: requesting information on brothers Edmond and Manoah Singleton, sons of Daniel Singleton of Orange. Edmond and Manoah, residents of KY file suit in 1806 to recover land in VA willed them by their father Daniel Singleton.

Mentioned in will of John Lancaster recorded Orange Co VA Will Bk 5 p. 164 “legacy lent to my three daughters Sarah, Susannah, and Elizabeth by their grandfather Daniel Singleton.”

From “Parmunkey Neighbors of Orange Co VA” p. 50-51 Daniel sold 900 acres to Edward Ware for 5 shillings. On p. 111 Daniel is listed with others as overseer on road 7-27-1773.
From “Patriots of the Upcountry” p.115-6 Daniel and son Edmond signed a petition filed 11-17-1777 to divide Orange County.

No parents or birth date are given for Susannah so we might assume she was born around 1718 when he husband was born. This would put her last child as being born when she was 37, She probably certainly predeceased Daniel as she is not mentioned at all in the will. There are several pedigree and ancestral files that give this year as a definite year for her death
