JANE ELLERY (1745-1787), BY JOHN DURAND

This beautiful and fashionable lady of quality was a great-aunt of Governor Thomas Hart Seymour. She was a daughter of John Ellery and Mary Austin of Hartford, where she was born December 1745, and where she died unmarried, August 23, 1787, at the age of forty-two. The canvas, measuring 24 x 29, is probably by John Durand, and therefore of particular interest, as few examples of the work of this artist are owned in Connecticut; presented October 13, 1841, by Major Henry Seymour, Governor Seymour's father, to the Connecticut Historical Society. A portrait of her brother, William Ellery (1740-1812), was presented by Major Henry Seymour at the same time to the Historical Society, but it has disappeared.
