John SEYMOUR (b. abt 1675, d. abt 1719)

John Seymour was baptised in Ogbourne St Andrew, Wiltshire, 1 Dec 1675, son of John Seymour and Anne (née Goddard). He was possibly living in Virginia by 1703. In 1707 he married Mary Jones at Mulberry Island, Warwick County, Virginia. Mary was the widow of Peter Jones and before him the widow of Randolph Crew. Mary and Randolph had a daughter called Mary (married to Peter Ridley) who gave a deposition that John died around 1719. John was a tobacco planter and writing master in the parish of Warwick, Virginia.
John and Mary had a son called Robert who was born 26th December 1707, Warwick County. In 1731 Robert surrendered property in Ogbourne St Andrew, Wiltshire, which he claimed was his as heir of his uncle Thomas Seymour (after his father had died). He sold this property for £21 to Edward Greenfield of Marlborough, Wiltshire. Robert was also a tobacco planter. He died 4 Mar 1773, Warwick County Virginia.
This is from his obituary – “nearly related to the royal family of Somerset and it was thought he had no bad title to the dukedom”.

Note: There are a couple of mistakes in this article as it states the declaration was drawn up by John Seymour in 1733 for his son but it was Robert who had it drawn up for himself.
