George SEYMOUR & Mary GOODE
Father: George SEYMOUR, (son of John Thomas SEYMOUR Jr), b. 1735, Brunswick County Virginia, d. 26 Jun 1809, Halifax County Virginia
In 1782 the large families of both George and William Seymour were living in Halifax County near Thomas Sparrow. George Seymour appears in the following land documents and his parentage is proved in his father Thomas Seymours will, see Thomas's notes. Henry______ disposed of three tracts on the branches of Terrible Creek in Halifax County: 80 acres to Thomas Bingham 16 November 1769, 465 acres to George Seymour 18 June 1770, and 235 acres to Joseph Moody 19 July 1770. He also shows up on the Halifax County tax list of 1789 amd 1798 I believe that George Seymours male children Champness, Larkin, Claiborne and Parham may be named for heroes of a historical dispute between a puritan man named William Claiborne (who founded and cleared Kent's Island ) and the Maryland Catholics led by Lord Calvert. Lord Calvert claimed the king gave him possession of the Kent Island and for years there were bloody battles between these two factions. Men in Claibornes corner were Thomas Larkin, John Parham and a man with the last name of Champness. While not a contempary of George Seymour, William Claiborne was a contempary of perhaps his great grandfather Thomas Seymour who may have lived in Maryland for a time. Many children get the first name of Claiborne around this time in Virginia and prior to him this was not a common first name. Also Seymours often name their children after historical figures of their time. Also it should be noted that Larkins, Champness and Parhams descendants end up in Lunenburg County where Terrible Creek is later located and where Thomas Seymour had his land. WILL OF GEORGE SEYMOUR in the name of God, Amen I George Seamore of County of Halifax being in my proper sound sences and memory do make and ordain this my last will and testament in the manner and form. Mother: Mary GOODE
I have a theory that perhaps Mary Goode was not the mother of all of George Seymours children because of the long span in which she has children from 1759 to 1790. George does not mention his wife in his will by name. I believe perhaps some of the children were from a second marriage. It is of course possible that he married her when she was a 15 year old girl, still this would put her having a child at 49 years old.
