Maxon Cemetery, where some of the Hawkins family is buried, is on Seymour Road outside Jackson. Though the King family (Newton Seymour married Mary Ann King) and the Willmore family (William Hawkins married Ann Willmore) do not connect for another generation or so, I wonder if the two families knew each other earlier.

Horatio Seymour built houses in MI and may have lived on Seymour Rd. He was born 1855 New York. His parents died when he was young and he left home at age 12 because he couldn't get along with his uncle. No one seems to know who his parents were. He apparently lived near Utica, NY. He married Jesse Eliza Chalker in MI and had two children: Lena who married Arthur Covert McDuffee and then a Clark, and a son Lynn Seymour.

Lena Seymour McDuffee was the mother of my uncle Covert Seymour McDuffee. In the 1900 census Horatio was listed as living on “Summer” street. I am not aware of any Summer street, but I do know that in the 1950's my uncle had relatives living on Seymour Rd.

Another relative?

Robert Seymour - arrived from England 1838. This information from Margie Etter: Robert was christened 1 Nov 1813 in Pinchbeck, Lincolnshire, England. His parents are James Seymour and Mary Hunter. Other siblings are Hunter James, James, Thomas Hunter and Mary, all were christened in Pinchbeck, England. Declaration of Intent filed in Washington County, AR 2 Jun 1847 for Robert. Found him 1850 Washington County, AR census. Nothing before these dates other than his marriage in 1842. Don't know where he left England or where he arrived. Believe brother, James, came with him.

SEYMOUR R. Market Gardener Langley

From Dianne Solesby

… an interesting idea that the name Seymour or Seamer or sea moor corresponds to the Fenlands - moors by the sea -vast expanses of marshy open flat lands. Part of me wonders if that is how this branch of the Seymours came by their name since it is a description of the land they settled.

Mary Ann King is the daughter of Benjamin King* and Ann Parker* [7]. She was born on 10 Oct 1814 in Kirton, Lincolnshire, England. Emigrated on 25 May 1838 (On the Barque Minstrel, arriving in New York from Hull, England). Occupation 1860 (Washer woman). From Dianne Solesby

A few years after Newton died at age 47, leaving a wife and 8 children (the youngest my great grandfather who was born that same year), my Seymours moved from Bridgewater in Washtenaw County to the Saginaw area settling in Bridgeport. The oldest girl, Mary Ann, had married and moved there with her new husband, so looks like Mary King Seymour sold the family farm and followed her daughter with her kids who ranged from 17 years to one year old. I know a brother of Newton's settled in Lenawee County. I also know that my great grandparents built across the street from the King family in Saginaw and that my grandparents and father and mother were friends of the Kings in Saginaw as well.

From tax records, the first year Mrs. Seymour paid the taxes was 1854. Before that Newton paid.

Newton Seymour and Mary Ann King. They were married Bef. 1837 in Kirton, Lincolnshire, England. They had 8 children.

Notes for George Seymour: Looking at dates, I feel there may be something wrong with this family. Would George, b. 1813, have married in 1861 and reared children? My guess is George is the grandfather and there is a son George who married in 1861.

Emma Wilson Westmoreland [12, 1]. She was born on 14 Mar 1823 in Frithville, Lincolnshire, England. She died 1887.

Seymore, Mary A. 1842 Michigan Robert G. Reynolds Sep 24, 1869 Royal Oak, MI aft. 1869

From Dianne Solesby

Her obit says she was born in Kirton in Holland Linc Eng Jan 17 1836 & came to America with her parents when she was 2 years old and settled in Washtenaw Co. She died in 1922 and was a rsident of Bridgeport for 64 years. It mentions one brother Charles K, Seymour (maybe King?). Mary Ann King Seymour (her mother) b. Oct. 10, 1815 in Eng. died May 28 1899 in Bridgeport MI. The King names I remember were Clayton and Rosalee King and Wally (must have been Wallace). Maybe Clayton parents would provide a clue. They lived on Congress Street in Saginaw. I know some of the Seymours - George Seymour, my great grandfather's brother I believe, settled in Detroit.

Daniel Guiette [16]. He was born Aug 1833 in New York. Occupation 1880 (Farmer). He died 1913 in As he isn't on the census. 1870 Census in Pic. 1880 Census in Pic. 1900 Census was unreadable. 1850 Census in Pic. 1910 Census in Pic.

Notes for Daniel Guiette: On his son, George, death record, the surname is spelled GUYATT.

His parents, James and Mary, were both born in England. In 1850 they were in Bridgeport, so the question is how did Daniel and Mary Ann meet?

His father lived with Daniel and Mary Ann for the 1870 census.

They have a 21 year old John King living with them in 1880 as a farm hand. Born in Michigan, with both parents born in Michigan, which John King is he?

In 1900, they have MacKie, age 8 with them. Born Dec 1892, I believe a daughter, but the image is very light. Speculating, there is a marriage between Thomas Mackey and Kitty Gowdy in 1864 in Wayne County. There is enough similarity between the names to wonder if there is a connection.

Daniel Guiette and Mary Ann Seymour. They were married on 24 Jan 1856. They had 9 children.
i. James Guiette [8]. He was born on 09 Mar 1856 in Bridgeport, Saginaw, Michigan. He married Mary Poirier. They were married 1905. He died on 23 Dec 1928 in Bay City, Bay, Michigan. Burial in Pinegrove Cemetery, Bridgeport.
Notes for James Guiette: I believe he was in Nederland, Boulder, Colorado in 1880, working as a laborer and staying in the house of an engineer.
ii. Lilla Guiette. She was born abt. 1858 in Bridgeport, Saginaw, Michigan.
iii. Ella Guiette. She was born Bet. 1860–1861 in Bridgeport, Saginaw, Michigan.
iv. Ruth A. Guiette [17]. She was born Bet. 1867–1868 in Bridgeport, Saginaw, Michigan. She died on 16 Apr 1935 in Bayport, Genesse, Michigan. Burial was Forest Lawn.
Notes for Ruth A. Guiette: The obituary index gives her age at death as 66, making her born in 1866.
v. Margaret Guiette. She was born Apr 1870 in Bridgeport, Saginaw, Michigan. Nick/Alt Name was Maggie.
vi. Daniel Guiette [8]. He was born on 24 Aug 1872 in Bridgeport, Saginaw, Michigan. Occupation 1927 (Trucking business). He died on 15 May 1927 in Flint, Genesse, Michigan.

September 5, 1881 Forest fires race across the Thumb. The summer of 1881 was exceptionally hot and dry. Although forest fires were an annual occurrence in Michigan, none rivaled those that engulfed the Thumb in early September. Several days of fires and smoke left 282 people dead and 3,400 buildings destroyed. Massive relief efforts prompted the American Red Cross to respond. It was the first domestic crisis for the newly organized aid association.
The Reitz Funeral Home handled his funeral.

I just did a Mich. census check for 1880 and there is no Newton Seymour in Bridgeport, Saginaw Co; he is definitely living in Woodstock, Lenawee Co. with his wife Mary Grace. It's spelled Seymore in this enumeration.

Mary Grace's father Rev. William Henry Bakewell was a Methodist minister and served in Bridgeport, Saginaw County, in 1871; no doubt, Mary Grace and Newton met while the Bakewells were living there.

LPD 1918

After 26 years with the Detroit Police Dept. Lt. Alfred Seymour wasn’t anxious to begin another career but did agree to sign a two-year contract with the city of Lansing. Chief Seymour’s LPD career spanned from 1918 to 1938.

Chief Alfred Seymour

1918-1938

Chief Seymour immediately required LPD officers to memorize the city ordinance manual, the LPD rulebook, and the regulations manual. Officers submitted a written report of their daily activities to the shift sergeant. Previously, only oral reports had been given. By 1921, the Chief and the Board had changed the qualifications for Lansing policemen to include: “Must be able to read and write English; be a resident of Lansing for one year and a resident of Michigan for two years; must never have been convicted of any crime; must be between the ages of 21-40 years and at least 5’9” tall weighing not less than 165 pounds. Must be of good health, a sound mind, possess steady habits and be of good moral character.” One of the personnel rules read, “Officers not paying their just debts will be dismissed.”

CHIEF SEYMOUR RETIRES

After 46 years in law enforcement, 20 as Lansing’s police chief, Alfred Seymour retired effective January 1, 1938, at the age of 71. He also retired his Mervin-Hulbert five shot revolver he had carried during his entire career. In 1932, the same year he was elected president of the IACP, he threatened to put all patrolmen back to walking beats because of the deplorable condition of the patrol cars. However, by the end of that year, LPD officers were driving six new REO sedans that were made in Lansing. Seymour, highly respected, had many accomplishments to his credit. Captain John F. O’Brien succeeded Seymour as Lansing’s sixth Chief of Police. Appointed to LPD in 1917, O’Brien held various jobs as a patrolman and in the detective bureau.

Obituary from The State Journal, Lansing, June 27, 1953, page 1

Ex-Chief of Police Succumbs
Alfred Seymour, 86, Led Department for 20 Years
Alfred Jackson Seymour, 86-year-old former chief of the Lansing police department, died unexpectedly of a heart attack at the home at 717 Moores River dr. shortly after 9 a.m. Saturday.

One of the few men in the state drawing pensions from two police departments, Mr. Seymour had been retired from the Lansing police department since 1938, when he completed 20 years of service in that capacity.

Previous to heading the Lansing police department, he had served for 27 years on the Detroit police force, retiring as a lieutenant to accept the Lansing position.

Mr. Seymour had arisen earlier Saturday and apparently was in good health when he was seized with a heart attack. The fire deparment inhalator was summoned, but crewmen were unable to revive him.

Daughter is Teacher
Mr. Seymour is survived by two daughters, Miss Mildred Seymour, a Lansing public school teacher, and Mrs. C.K. Colby of Perry, in addition to three grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

He was born in Livingston county July 23, 1866.

Mr. Seymour was a member of Plymouth Congregational church, and was a past president of the International Association of Chief's of Police. He also was a charter member of the Michigan association.

Mr. Seymour was instrumental in modernizing the Lansing police department. When he came here, the department's motor fleet consisted of a Model T Ford “pokey wagon.”

Favored Beat Men
By the time he retired, there were four patrol cars equipped with one-way radios, forerunners of the present fleet of nearly 20 patrol cars and motorcycles, all equipped with two-way radios.

However, he still held out for the “old-fashioned” foot patrolman, claiming that considerable crime was prevented merely by the presence of uniformed officers walking beats.

He was head of the department when the most baffling case in Lansing police annals - the mysterious murder of Mrs. Pearl Britten, local socialite - occurred in the 1920's.

The murder occurred in the Britten home which was within a few yards of Mr. Seymour's home, and was never solved.

A year ago, he said that he believed the slaying was committed by a carnival worker. Funeral services will be held at the Estes-Leadley Colonial chapel Tuesday at 10 a.m. Burial will be in the Woodlawn cemetery in Detroit.
