Andrew Paterson MACDONALD & Margaret Buchanon GORDON

Father: Andrew Paterson MACDONALD, (son of Peter Croll MCDONALD), b. 8 Aug 1848, Glamis Angus Scotland, d. 2 Aug 1934, Chicago Illinois, bur. Montrose Cemetery

NOTE THIS BROTHER AND HIS DESCENDANTS CHOOSE MACDONALD IN MODERN DAY RECORDS SPELLING AS OPPOSED TO MCDONALD> Andrew's birth year info comes from various conflicting records. His christening record states the year 1848 taken from familysearch ancestral file however on various census in US in Chicago Illinois he lists his birth year as 1850 and 1851. 1850 being the most frequent date However his extracted birth year date is 1848..As most of the brothers do on their census's birth years vary. Andrew's middle name is listed in various ancestral files as Andrew Stewart and also as Andrew Paterson. Although it is listed as Stewart on his extracted birth file. However on his tombstone it lists him as Andrew Paterson MacDonald . A lot of Scottish altered their middle names once they came to the states and he may have done so. Because the middle names were often family surnames, children once they reached adulthood chose to change that middle name merely because they wanted to be unique and not have a middle name that four or five of their siblings had. The difference in the spelling of the last name is also not unusual. All of Andrew's records from childhood, birth record, marriage record and all census from his childhood list the spelling of his last name as McDonald not MacDonald. However, many people changed their names when they came to the US in order to be different, avoid stigma or perhaps because immigration folks did this for them. Names changes were hardly rare. In census's in Chicago he shows up twice as Andrew McDonald and twice as Andrew MacDonald. Again , Andrew does not appear to be a particular family name prior to his being named Andrew. New information shows that Isabel Malcolm's mother was probably a woman named Isabel Paterson. He may have adopted his great grandma's family Paterson name then. for his middle name. However, another clue to his namesake may lie in Andrew's cousins marriage. His cousin Elizabeth McDonald(she is his uncle David's daughter, David being Peter's brother, not to be confused with the David that is Andrew's actual brother who was single and never had children ) marries a man named Andrew Paterson in 1858. While this is ten. years after Andrew's birth, the man in question may have been a family friend or even a relation that Peter(Andrew's father) knew prior to Andrew's birth. . It seems a curious coincidence that this would have nothing to do with his name. . His granddaughter Dorothy Diehl made reference in a phone call to me that his middle name was indeed Paterson with one 't ' His marriage record to Margaret B Gordon lists him as Andrew (P)Paterson McDonald. Andrew McDonald and Margaret Buchanon Gordon live the first few years ot their life together in Old Monkland Whifflet district in Larnarkshire where Andrew is a blacksmith which he did even in Chicago later. . . Peter McDonald and Margaret Stewart, his parents are also living in Old Monkland Scotland at the time of Peter's death in 1877. In fact the witness signature on the death certificate of Peter is his son Andrew McDonald. The births of the first three children born to Andrew and Margaret B Gordon are indeed born in Whifflet Old Monkland. Those children;s names are Peter, John and William. And Peter's, (the oldest child) birth record puts them firmly in Old Monkland as early as 1873. This half brother of Daniel's came to the United States on November 17,1879(at age 29) on the ship Ethiopa going through the ports of Glasgow Scotland and Moville, Ireland. His place of origin is listed as Forfarshire Scotland. With him are his wife Margaret (26), Peter (5) John G (3) and a small son William listed only as months old. While he landed in New York he soon makes his way to Chicago Illinois In the 1880's and 1890's he lived on 50 McGovern Street., per voter registeration list in 1888 and 1890. By 1892 he has moved to 50 Edgewood Avenue(now railroad tracks) and then later he lives on 2867 Edgewood Avenue(see photo of house) , According to my Aunt LaVon Schwarzenholz, who met his daughter Christine once, he was said to be rather comfortable money wise and did a family tree after 1900. While that tree has not yet been found, it is the source of family legends , displaying Andrew Carnegie, Mary Queen of Scots and Jeanette MacDonald. Andrew Carnegie is a prime candidate for being related to this family in his prior ancestry through Daniel's wife Margaret Ritchie. Her mother Catherine is a Carnegie. . It is said by Carnegie genealogists that the early Carnegies came from Forfarshire County before moving to Fife where Andrew, the industrialist was born in 1835. A family Bible of Daniel McDonald's makes the following reference, Andrew Carnegie, Margaret and Catherine Carnegie are related. This is probably a reference to “Margaret Ritchie” whose mother is Catherine Carnegie, thus Margaret and Catherine are related. Two of Julia McDonald's grandchildren Shirley Yarkowsky and Mary Jane Barnes recalled Andrew Carnegie as being a distant relation,in family folklore. They in fact mentioned in separate conversations before I did. Jeanette MacDonald was said to have been Anna Stewart(Stuart) McDonald's 4th or 5th cousin. The most dubious claim is probably Mary Queen of Scots. Around the early 1900's genealogists often linked her to countless Stewart families fraudlently. Whatever the case, if these Stewarts are related to Mary Queen of Scots this only applies to Daniel McDonald;s half siblings as Daniel's real mother was a woman named Margaret Crocket not Margaret Stewart and they were two separate women , . Andrew is listed as a blacksmith and a teamster at various points in his life. He was a waltz champion and an organ player. He belonged to the St Andrew's society in Chicago Illinois . He joined in 1909 and states on application ,his age was 59, , he was born in Glamis Forfarshire, resided at 50 Edgewood Avenue and was sponsored by a man named John Williamson. He gives his occupation as a self employed contractor. He appears to be fiercly proud of his Scottish heritage, always insisting on the Gaelic MacDonald and claiming his first language was Gaelic.None of his brothers make this claim. And indeed in this part of Scotland when Andrew was born most people did not speak Gaelic. All of Andrews children seem to have been rather well schooled in some trade as each on the 1900 census have professional jobs, even the girls. Children's occupations include stenographer, bookkeeper and dress designer. Surely he must have been a well loved man as all of his children's obits that have been found make reference to him as beloved father. Info from Montrose cemetery includes the notation that there are no single gravestones in the lots of the MacDonald's but one single grave marker. Also from notation that on some of the cards including Andrew's actual dates of death are Aug 2 1934 He was buried on Aug 4 1934 per Montrose cemetery records. Date of death confirmed death index online official site Illinois.Under Mac Donald Also the lot info is as follows Montrose cemetery Lot 711 Section Fairlawn , SE Corner. According to the ledger Andrew was living at 2867 Edgewater, which probably is Edgewood where he was prior. He was 85 years old 11 months and 22 days. He must have died at home as other cards list hospital where person died. A brief phone conversation with his granddaughter Dorothy Diehl who was 97 years old in 2005 had her recounting that Andrew was a soft spoken man who rarely talked of Scotland. I tried to make further contact with this family and strangely after the first conversation when I referenced Daniel, I was sent a brief, curt email telling me that the spelling of the name MacDonald and McDonald meant that Daniel and Andrew were not brothers. As any genealogist knows name spellings are constantly varied and there is no doubt that Daniel McDonald and Andrew McDonald were half brothers are evidenced by many documents putting them in the same house in Glamis. I have no idea why they did not want to claim Daniel as his brother except for his illegitimacy.Census info for Andrew McDonald in US1880 Name Relation Marital Status Gender Race Age Birthplace Occupation Father's Birthplace Mother's Birthplace
