60. William Seymour

60. WILLIAM5 SEYMOUR (John4, John3, John2, Richard1), born at Hartford, Conn., 18 Aug. 1728, died at New Hartford, Conn., 18 May 1782; married at New Hartford, 27 Dec. 1753, MEHITABEL MERRILL, born at New Hartford, 25 May 1734, died at Stillwater, N.Y., 29 June 1810, daughter of Noah and Esther.

His wife's father, Noah Merrill, was the first man appointed Town Clerk of New Hartford, though he never acted in that capacity, having died in 1739 before he took the oath of office – the first death among the pioneers of the town. William Seymour was a farmer, and appears to have led an uneventful life.

Administration upon the estate of William Seymour late of New Hartford granted to Mehitable Seymour and Noah Seymour, both of New Hartford, 9 June 1783. Inventory taken 7 Jan. 1783. Amount, £243-15-0.

[His widow Mehitable Merrill, and her family, moved after his death in 1782 to New York State and settled near Stillwater. She is buried in the “Yellow Meetinghouse Cemetery” there. Just when this exodus from New Hartford to Stillwater took place is not known to the writer, but I am led to believe the removal took place about 1785. Probably these Seymours were in the vanguard of that large group of Connecticut men and women who moved from their rocky farms in the Connecticut hills to the far more fertile lands in “York State,” where the name “Seymour” is legion: so many, alas, that all who bore it cannot be recorded in this book.-G. D. S.]
