MARY (LEDYARD) SEYMOUR (1735-1807), WIFE OF THE FIRST MAYOR

Daughter of John Ledyard, Esq., of New London and Hartford; wife of Thomas Seymour, First Mayor of Hartford; sister of the gallant Col. William Ledyard, the “Hero of Fort Griswold” in 1781; aunt of John Ledyard, the traveller; mother of Capt. Thomas Youngs Seymour, the “Beau Sabreur of Saratoga”; mother of Major Henry Seymour of Hartford; mother of Mary Juliana Seymour, the famous beauty of Hartford of her time; grandmother of Thomas Hart Seymour, the “Hero of Chapultepec,” U.S. Minister to Russia, and Governor of Connecticut. The canvas deposited in the Connecticut Historical Society, 1885, by her granddaughter, Mary Ellery Seymour, of New Orleans. The companion picture of her husband, the First Mayor, has long since disappeared.
