The last place John appears is in Ayr county of Ayrshire Scotland signing his mother Margaret Stewart McDonald's death certificate. This son signs the death certificate of his mother Margaret Stewart in Ayrshire in 1898. OnMay 24, 1898 six weeks or so after his mother's death, John McDonald shows up mysteriously as a boarder in Airdie New Monkland not far from his home where his wife Janet and children live. He dies in this boarding house with no witnesses under mysterious circumstances, where his death certificate lists him as a sudden death with no certification which means the police and coroner were called to investigate before his death could be certified at all. Could this have been a suicide or a murder or just a weird natural death? It is hard to tell. However , it is worth noting that the brothers he was closest to, Andrew and William whom he followed to Lanarkshire have gone to America and his mother died six weeks ago . His wife Janet does not waste much time remarrying as she remarries on March 9, 1899 to a man named William Christie. Perhaps he had always wanted to follow his brothers or was depressed over his mother's death. This is mere speculation as the certificate does not reach a conclusion. It is worth noting that on his wife's death certificate many, many years later, her son John McDonald lists her as the wife of John Paterson McDonald a retired farmer. There is no mention of second husband William Christie.

Marriage certificate proves parentage. Her birth is based on an ancestral file that says she is born about 1854 and on the census in 1881 she is 29 making the year close to 1852. Janet dies on Feb 22 1932 at Quarry cottage longliggend street, in New Monkland Lanarkshire. She is 80 years old and dies of senile decay. Her son John is present. She states she was married to John Paterson McDonald.
