In the book the History of Wyandotte County the article advises, “The manifold destiny of the office of clerk of Kansas City KS are being most effectively administered by Mr Smyth was is an incumbent of this position since 1909 and who is one of the well known and popular citizens of the metropolis of Wyandotte County , where he has maintained his home since 1882. John Edwin Smyth is a native of the fine old Bluegrass state . He was born in the village of Liberty Casey County Kentucky. The present city clerk was but four years of age at the time of his family removal from Kentucky to Kansas City Missouri. He was afforded the advantages of public schools and was sixteen years old when the home was established in Kansas City KS . He was an apprentice of stereotyping and became an employee of various Kansas City newspapers.” It goes on to describe him as a staunch Republican. He married Laura Case a school teacher in KC Kansas. John's obit says the newspapers he worked at were the KC Star, Old Journal Newspaper and Western Newspaper. He was a stereotyper for 50 years after his post as city clerk was over. He lived until age 88 and lived at 202 N 23rd Street KC KS. He was a mason.and member of International Stereotypers union. After his first wife Laura Case died in 1938 he remarried a woman named Anna who survived him. He died of chronic bronchitis. His obit reads John E Smyh was former city clerk of KC KS, from 1909 to 1913 , 88 years old died today at his home., 202 N 23rd A City license inspector from 1907 to 1908 he became city clerk in 1909 under the old council form of governmentand again in 1911 under the commission for of government. Mr Smyth then moved to Chicago where he was in the garage business for several years before returning here. Born in Kentucky , he was a resident of KC KS for 72 years. He was a stereotyper for Western Union, the KS Star and the Kansas City Journal. A thirty second degree mason he was a member of Wyandotte Masonic lodge 3 and the International Stereotypers and Electrotypers union AFL No 6. He is survived by his wife Anna Smyth of the home. Funeral services will be at 2 o clock saturday afternoonat the Fulton Chapel Burial will be in Highland Park Cemetery. The body will lie in state after 5 o clock Friday afternoon at the chapel.
