29. Lieut. Bevil Seymour

29. LIEUT. BEVIL4 SEYMOUR (Thomas3, John2, Richard1), ,baptized at Hartford, Conn., 11 Jan. 1712/13, died at Newington Parish, Wethersfield, Conn., 17 Nov. 1774, aged 61. He married first LYDIA DODD, baptized at Hartford, 19 Dec. 1708, died at Newington Parish 16 Jan. 1736, in her 28th year, daughter of Edward and Lydia (Flower); and secondly, at West Hartford, Conn., 23 Apr. 1740, THANKFUL4 MERRILL, born at Hartford 25 Mar. 1712, died at Wethersfield 24 Sept. 1801, in her 90th year, daughter of Abel3 (John2, Nathaniel1) and Mabel (Easton) of Hartford.

Bevil Seymour settled in Newington Parish, Wethersfield, where his children were born and where he and most of his family are buried. He was elected Ensign of the Tenth Company, Sixth Regiment of Militia, at Wethersfield, 14 Nov. 1754, and Lieutenant of the same company in May 1757, holding the latter office until 1762, when he asked to be dismissed, “on Acct of Indisposition of Body by reason of which he has for some time past been and yet remains unable to Serve therein.” In his will, dated 23 Mar. 1770 and proved 21 Dec. 1774, he names his wife Thankful, his four sons, viz., Abel, George, Elias, and Ashbel, his two eldest daughters, viz., Lydia Webster and Mary, wife of Moses Hopkins, his daughter Mabel, wife of Charles Morgan, and his two youngest daughters, Thankful and Lois Seymour.

i. LYDIA5, m. ZEPHANIAH5 WEBSTER, bapt, at West Hartford 7 June 1724, d. there 7 Mar. 1761, aged 36 years, 9 months, s. of Daniel4 (John3, Robert2, John1) and Miriam (Cooke) and uncle of Noah Webster.
Children, bapt. at West Hartford:
1. Bevil, chose his mother for guardian, 8 Feb. 1773, and became a book-seller and printer in Hartford by 1778.
2. Thankful, bapt, 7 July 1754.
3. Zephaniah, bapt. 1 July 1756; d. young.
4. Zephaniah, bapt. 15 July 1759.
ii. THEODORE, b. abt. 1732-3; d. of smallpox 13 Dec. 1760, in his 27th year.
iii. MARY, b. 4 Dec. 1735; d. at Hartford in Nov. 1795, being bur. 6 Nov.; m. there 9 June 1768, as his second wife, MOSES HOPKINS of Hartford, s. of Thomas and Mary (Beckley). He m. (1) 7 Apr. 1763, Elizabeth Deming, who d. 7 July 1767.
Children by second wife:
iv. ABEL, b. 13 Feb. 1741; d. unm. abt. 1786. Distribution of the estate of Abel Seymour late of Wethersfield, deceased, was made 13 Sept. 1786, between his brothers and sisters, being the only legal heirs, viz., George, Elias, Ashbel, and Lois Seymour, all of Wethersfield, Charles Morgan and wife Mabel of Hartford, and Abijah Flagg and wife Thankful of Hartford.
v. GEORGE, b. 16 July 1742; d. unm. 3 Sept. 1835, aged 93. His gravestone says that he was “all his life Deaf & Dumb.” In his will“ dated 20 Feb. 1826 and proved 23 Sept. 1835, he bequeaths his estate to four of the children of his brother Elias Seymour, viz., Theodore, Jeremiah, Jerusha Seymour, and Nancy Wells.
vi. MABEL, b. 5 June 1744; m. at Newington Parish, Wethersfield, 18 Dec. 1766, CHARLES MORGAN of West Hartford.

1. A child, stillborn 19 July 1767.

3. Thoda (son), bapt. 10 June 1770; probably the Theodore who m. 26 July 1791, Esther Stocking.

5. Cate, bapt, 6 Jan. 1776.
6. Phalla (daughter), bapt, 3 Nov. 1777.
7. George, bapt. 9 Feb. 1781.
8. Lydia, bapt. 9 Jan. 1785. One of their children was killed by a cart wheel 27 Apr. 1782. A “Mitty” Morgan m. at Hartford, 7 May 1820, Benjamin Sullivan.

He m. (2) 20 Nov. 1791, Thankful Woodhouse of Wethersfield, who d. 18 Mar. 1843, aged 90.
