John Singleton says he was born in Mo on all of his census's however his children Nancy and John advise on 1910 Census that there father was born in Kentucky which I believe is in error. Their grandfather was born in Kentucky. . John Singleton's age stays constant. The John Singleton born in Linn County is almost certainly the son of Manoah Singleton. Manoah has a son John born in 1840 Missouri and Manoah himself dies in Wyandotte County Kansas. Manoah also lives in the same township as John and his wife Susan do in 1870. There is often much confusion with this couple as his wife is named variously Mary Susan Mayfield and even on one World Connect file she is called Mary “Polly” Mayfield. John names his first child Nancy and she was called Nannie all her life to distinguish her from her grandmother. John Singleton is in neighboring Lafeyette County Mo in 1860 as a single man and then John and Mary Susan show up first on the 1870 Census in Wyandotte County, Shawnee township with their first three children Nancy, Henry and John. On the 1870 census Mary Susan is going by Mary, on all other census's she is Susan .In 1875 John is in Shawnee township Wyandotte County Kansas as well and his father Manoah is nearby listed as MC . Also on this census, for some reason Mary Susan Mayfield is listed as Anna, when previously she is under Mary in 1870, however this is the same family. On the marriage certificate of John and Mary her name reads Mary S Mayfield. They were married in Saline County. Mary Susan Mayfield is documented as Nancy Singleton's mother on her death certificate. Although on the death certificate she is listed as Susie, she went by Mary at the beginning of her marriage and then went by her middle name of Susan. She seems to have grown up in and around Saline County Mo. She states she was born in Mo.on all her census's. Her age does vary a bit. In 1870 she is 33 making her born around 1837. On 1880 Census she is 46 putting her birth year around 1834 And on the 1860 Census she lists her age as 20 making her born around 1840. She must have lost both parents by then and right next door to her is a Sallie Mayfield 18 probably her sister and they dont seem to have parents. Most women in that time did not move out on their own that early. This was right before her marriage to John Singleton. I have used an about date of 1837/ She is listed as Mary S Mayfield on her marriage license. New info shows Mary Susan Mayfield born in 1836 Cooper County Missouri and her parents as Henry Mayfield and Catharine Arisman. Cooper County is right next door to Saline County and . Susan Mayfield as she is now called on the 1860 Census is living with a Sallie Mayfield as her father is deceased in 1860. However there is a Henry who is 40 years old making him pretty certain to be her relative probably a brother. This Henry has a 4 year old girl Amanda living with him.
